Knowledge vs Information vs Data vs Wisdom

From the definitions of KM terms in my earlier post, we can safely make these statements:

That Data CAN produce information,

Than Information CAN produce Knowledge,

That Knowledge plus experience CAN produce Wisdom.

Please note the use of the word CAN in the above statements. This indicates that the statements are not true always and one does not neccessarily always lead to the other.

  1. i think these definitions follow the linear school of thought of how data is transormed into information and information transformed into knowledge. It is important to point out that there are also other schools of thought that do not follow this linear approach to the transformation of data to knowledge

  2. thanks for your comment Chrisch,

I agree that these terms do not have a linear relationship and I'm sorry if my definitions indicated that. I meant to stress a relationship and not neccessariy a linear one.

I'll have a more detailed post on this soon.

  3. As I have seen the articals the data do not produce information, information can be retrive from the collected data.

information do not product knowledge.. informatioin is information for some and knowledge for other.

  4. Having gone through lectures/seminars on KID, I have changed my view regarding the existence of a linear relationship between data, inforfamtion and knowledge (KID). I still maintain there is a relationship between them. This relationship could however be cyclic, in that, data can create information and information, knowledge. And from knowledge a new set of data can come to light that needs transforming to knowledge. Another view exists that before one can determine the type of data to collect, one needs some information or indeed knowledge of some sort to be efective in the task of data collection. This may further reinforce the cyclic nature or relationship of KID.

  5. Yemovon’s idea that KID is cyclic is interesting but I think the relationship is more complex as knowledge is required to choose relevant data initially, and then to transform it into information and finally to use the information in a specific context. I also agree with Siraj’s comment that what is information or even to one person may by just data to another. I very simple example is the colour of car paints. To the car manufacturer, colour is just one specification of their cars, i.e. data but to the paint manufacturing company, colour is information or even possible knowledge as they need to know how to produce it, and what other colours have to be included in it.

  6. I agree with Siraj that Inforamtion can be retrieved from data and Knoeldge from information, however, i dont agree that data canot produce information or information, knowledge.

This leads to my current stand on these issues which is that for the transformation of data to information and information to knowledge, knowledge is required in the first place! I tend to agree with Joanna that the relationship between them may not be as simple as a linear one or cyclical as suggested by Yemi, but a much more complex representation which has knowledge as a focal point.
